How Caspians Hit the Mark at Horseback Archery - An Interview With Dawn O'Brien

CHLC: How many Caspians do you own and how long have you had them? (Please list ages, height, and color)

Dawn: Right now we have six. Three that are with us on a permanent basis, one for training and two on a semi permanent basis. Our superstar is Tanadara Ostrali, a grey mare, 21 years old and around 11.3 hands. The others are three bay mares who range from 11 hands to 12 hands, another grey mare who is just under 11 hands, and a gelding who is 11.2. Who started with Tandara Ostrali in the end of April 2019, so we are that new to the breed.

CHLC: How did you hear about horseback archery and what motivated you to use your Caspians in this sport?

Dawn: We have been participating in Mounted Archery for the past 4 years. Tandara Ostrali is just so easy going that we thought we would just give her a try and she took to it like a duck to water.

CHLC: How does your Caspians shine in this sport as opposed to another breed?

Dawn: She is quick moving, steady and very tuned into her rider. She really listens to the rider's seat and legs; which is huge for this sport.

CHLC: What advice would you give for someone with a Caspian that wanted to try out Horseback Archery? How would they start?

Dawn: Make sure your Caspian is already well rounded and has been ridden in various environments. The term desensitized is an apt one. Start slowly by just having your riders hold a bow while they ride, then wave it around and practice the motion of firing the arrow at the halt, then try it out at a walk. Make sure your Caspian is on a lead. It will take several sessions, but these little horses are fast learners!

CHLC: In closing, is there anything you would like to add?

Dawn:I have worked with many breeds over the years, and so far the Caspians as a whole are incredibly fast learners. At the end of the day take your time and have fun. The more fun you are having the more your Caspians, the more they will enjoy it as well.

Thank you so much Dawn!

I have learned over the years that Caspians are a very smart breed. I could believe that they would be very good at this sport.
